McKeesport is located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, approximately twelve miles southeast of the city of Pittsburgh. Settled in 1769, McKeesport was founded by David McKee and son John who established a ferryboat service on the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers. Incorporated as a city in 1891, present day McKeesport is home to a population of nearly 20,000 residents who enjoy the rich history, scenic river vistas, and beautiful seasonal weather that is common to the region.
Situated at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers, McKeesport abounds with opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation. The city is home to a portion of the Great Allegheny Passage, a rails to trails system of hiking and biking trails that stretches for hundreds of miles through the Allegheny Appalachian Mountains, linking Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh and beyond. Whitewater rafting, tubing, and canoeing are popular river sports on the fast-flowing Youghiogheny, while fishing and pleasure boating are frequent leisure-time pursuits on the Monongahela.
Local sites of interest include the Renziehausen Park Rose Garden and Arboretum, McKeesport Heritage Center, and Penn State Greater Allegheny Campus, as well as a number of parks and recreational facilities that are available for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
